Had on tap at the brewery.
Despite the name, this is definitely more of a schwarzbier with a fine 1 finger off white head and nearly black body that lets a little deep brown show. Doesn't quite lace, but it looks a bit like a Guinness from a distance.
Aroma leads with a nice roasty malt bill that is quite present and almost coffee like but a crisp dry roasted malt is there as well. Certainly a bit of that signature mexican lager aroma, but it plays very well here.
Taste is again roasty, but very dry with a bit of roasted malt bitterness that quickly meshes with bittering hops to make an almost nuanced bitterness backed by coffee notes and big dark bread. There is a hop character but it is all coming from very early in the boil.
Feel is full bodied but quite dry and crisp, with a certain dry mouthcoating quality that's hard to explain. The bitterness probably adds to it a bit since that sticks around in the long finish.
Overall this is a creative mexican lager schwarzbier hybrid. I see both sides of the name coming through and it is quite tasty and unique. Hops are detectable and slightly bitter but by no means overwhelming.
