473 mL can from a SoBDL gift pack purchased at the LCBO; dated Sep 26 2023 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear, dark brown colour with brick red highlights, topped initially with a half-inch of loose, frothy, light tan-coloured head that lasts less than sixty seconds. A bubbly collar of suds remains, with some stringy lace deposition after a few sips - looks normal enough. Hints of milk chocolate and caramelized sugars are mostly obscured by the aggressive spice blend, which leans heavily on ginger, as it probably should. The nutmeg and clove are no slouches, either, with the cinnamon and cardamom serving in a supporting role.

It's palatable, but the spices are too dominant, and overall I do not get much of a gingerbread feel from the flavour profile - instead it's more along the lines of a pumpkin spiced ale, sans pumpkin. Flavours of chocolate, toffee and toasted bread overlap with big, spicy notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and ginger. Faint roastiness on the back end, with ginger, cinnamon and cardamom lasting into a persistent aftertaste. Light in body, with low-ish carbonation that weakly agitates the tongue; feels thin and a little flat, but goes down easily enough.

Final Grade: 3.48, a B-. SOBDL Gingerbread Porter is one of those beers that tries to do too much, with its lack of cohesion bringing it all down. The spices steal the show, largely because the base porter is too meek to rise to the occasion, but the thin mouthfeel doesn't help much, either. Gingerbread is a dessert that should be both sweet and spicy, but this is mainly spicy - maybe if they'd aimed for a higher abv (say 5.2-5.5%), this porter might've turned out more well-rounded and satisfying. A passable gimmick beer, but not a brew I'd deliberately look to repeat.
