473 mL can from a SoBDL gift pack purchased at the LCBO; dated Sep 29 2023 and served slightly chilled.

Pours black as night, fitted with two fingers of soapy, tan-coloured head that collapses over the next three or four minutes. A frothy collar and creamy quarter-inch cap live on, with a thick ring of lace deposited in the process; it's a fine-looking stout. Peppermint on the nose, with added hints of dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, roasted malts and caramelized sugars; it's giving off mint chocolate vibes for sure.

Not great, but it delivers the peppermint and chocolate flavours that were promised. I'm tasting rich dark chocolate, peppermint oil and roasted malts, with very little development past that. Minty finish with dark chocolate sweetness lingering on into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation that gently agitates the tongue; feels smooth, but it leaves a chalkiness behind on the palate (e.g. similar to chewing on an antacid tablet), which I found highly unappealing. One can was more than enough.

Final Grade: 3.28, a C+. Fact - peppermint oil is good for clearing out your sinuses, so much so that drinking this beer made my nose runny (and no, I'm not sick, or allergic). Sadly, Chocolate Peppermint Stout might be the weakest effort I've seen from these SoBDL collaborations so far. My main peeve is the strange, chalky film that this stout left in my mouth after each sip - something I've never encountered in the past, but must be related to one of the extracts. Beyond that, the aroma is ok I guess, but the flavours are barely passable, achieving the desired gimmick in a less than satisfactory manner. Drinkable if you're curious, but not recommended.
