Burial at Sea is a collaborative project between head brewer's Jeff Hancock of DC Brau and Stephen Jones of Oliver Ales in Baltimore, MD. Mild ales are traditionally referred to as "session ales" known for their low alcohol content which is around 3.2 - 4.0%. Despite their low alcohol content, Milds are just as flavorful as beers with a higher ABV. In crafting this beer we used only the finest malt's and hop's from England. Burial at Sea starts with a great malty nose boasting aromas of milk chocolate and biscuity sweetness. The beer has a medium mouthfeel that drinks with a soft, mineral smoothness and just enough hops to counter the chewy malt character. Fermented with a clean American yeast that lets the oats, barley and hops dominate and take center stage.

I liked this. A lot. Haven't always been a fan of English ales, but the nitro can, as well as the fact that it came from two great craft breweries, I thought I'd give it a try. Nice brown color in the glass with the falling nitro bubbles. Beautiful head (beer mustache), with just a hint of roasted biscuity malt in the nose. Flavor was all malt, but the hops provided a nice dry bitterness in the aftertaste. Excellent balance, IMHO. I welcomed the lower ABV. The beer was so smooth and drinkable, it could be easily "chugged" and enjoyed without the buzz. I'm glad the can was larger too. I liked it so much I went back and bought more.

Had on tap.

Arrived in a pint glass with a slighty hazy, brown body and a thin head.

Fruity aroma with some raspberries and toasted malt. A little bit of bread.

There is a metallic note in the taste along with berries and caramel. Some toast is present along with a definite tartness. There is plenty of sweetness which gets to be a little too much at times and hurts the drinkability factor.

Overall, I wasn't really impressed with this beer. Too sweet and tart.

On tap at RFD, Washington, D.C. - March 2012:

The beer appeared an opaque brown that produced a nice 2 finger head, off white with some lacing. The head was not well maintained, but did provide for some decent lacing rings around the glass.

The aroma is mainly toasted malts, no hops to note and a slight biscuit aroma. A little lighter than expected, but good and probably right for the style.

The taste of the beer is really good, very well balanced, toasted malts with a slight sweet finish.

The beer gave had a medium, body to it, lower carbonation level, as expected. Very good to excellent drinkability as it is very smooth, but yet had a slightly chewy feel to it. Overall, a very good beer and a style that I wish would catch on a little more.

On tap at the brewery, beer is brown and hazy with a wispy tan head of small bubbles that forms some lacing on the walls of the glass, moderate to low carbonation, looks like a mild.

Aroma is a little weak, a little grainy, smells like a mild.

Beer is light in body with a mild bitterness on the back, a nice thin malt character and a mild yeastiness / breadiness makes this beer above average to me. a fine little mild.

I had this on cask at Max's. Served in an imperial pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish amber with a finger of fluffy off white head that leaves some lacing on the glass. Nice looking beer.

Smell: Mild grain with some hops that are apparent, but not overpowering. There is just a touch of sweetness from the grain.

Taste: Like the smell, this beer has a mild flavor, go figure. Sweet grain with a mildly bitter finish. This reminds me of a mild red ale.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mild carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was a really nice session ale. It's great when you get such a nice flavor from such a low abv beer. I would have this one again.

64 oz brewery filled growler into an imperial pint glass.

This is a collaboration with Oliver Ales in Baltimore, MD. Batches where brewed both here and at the Pratt Street Alehouse.

Pours a deep hazed copper, with several fingers of creamy off-white head. This settles down into a smooth ½ finger of rich foam that just drenches the sides of the glass with heavy sticky lacing. The aroma has a spicy and leafy citrus character to it, which gives way to light notes of cocoa and caramel with a stronger presence of freshly baked biscuits across the back. This has a pleasant flavorful nose to it.

The taste has a firm crisp hop bite to it, with fresh green citrus flavors that meld into notes of toffee, light cocoa power, and doughy grains. The finish is fairly dry, with a lingering leafy and spicy feel. The mouthfeel is lighter to medium bodied, with a lively feel up front that matches well with the crispness of those hops but then smoothes out nicely with more of a creamy feel across the back of the throat that keeps this VERY easy refreshing feeling. This has a solid presence to it but without any alcohol holding it back.

This was very good, coming of like an American take on an English Dark Mild Ale, with a cleaner and more assertively hoppy profile that had this feeling more like an English Bitter at times. There is no doubt though that this was quite flavorful and HUGELY drinkable thanks to that crisp body and low alcohol presence. This was very nicely done and I’d love to see it stick around.
