Based on a British style stout, but adding lactose sugar and oats to increase body and mouth feel. This allows for a sessionable alcohol content but a sweeter flavor.

L: Pours a dark black with a very small tan head and no lacing.

S: Dark roasted malt, bitter chocolate, some smoked meat, a little toffee, very inviting aroma.

T: Dark roasted malt, some smoked meat and bitter chocolate, some toffee and caramel a milky sweetness at the end. Not as sweet as some milk stouts and a little more bitter.

F: Medium body, creamy carbonation.

O: I fin most milk stouts too sweet, so I love that this is less sweet and a little more bitter.

12 oz. Can

Pours a nice brownish color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger off-white head, which leaves some nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, chocolate/toffee. The taste is malty, chocolate/toffee, nice sweetness. Medium body. Overall, a nice tasty brew.

From an undated can into a goblet.

Pours with a very beautiful and style-nailing thick and puffy tan head capping a dark and rich-appearing deep brown body. Excellent presentation.

The nose is rather faint, but displays light roast and a hint of chocolate. Less than expected.

The flavor and feel are not as velvety, rich, layered or creamy as expected. I was disappointed considering how amazing this looks. That being said, this is a good beer for sure. Mild roast and chocolate are simple and not intriguing. The aftertaste of lightly bitter roast fades quickly. The mouthfeel isn't as creamy as I hoped, but is in line with a 1 dimensional version of the style.

Conclusion: A fine beer (one I would be happy to have brewed) but in today's super competitive world of ever rising craft beer standards, it is forgettable. I like it but don't love it and there are better options. In 2001 it would have made a nice splash in the Denver beer scene...
