Was very impressed to find a restaurant that brewed its own beer on my recent trip to Canberra. It's a real rarity, and I took the opportunity to try their offering with both hands.
Their lager style (the beer they had on offer at the time of my visit) came in an unassuming form, a decent gold amber colour, minimal head, served in a very small pils glass made out to look like it was bigger.
The smell was quite hoppy, what I always associate with a pilsener, backed with a layer of yeastiness that added a backbone to it. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't unpleasant.
The taste lets this one down a lot though. I don't know if it was the batch I got, but it was far to phenolic. It tasted very artificial, chemical, a little bit of ammonia that you only pick up when it's in your mouth. It went down reasonably smoothly, and the mouthfeel was alright, but overall it could have been a lot better.
It's truly excellent that you can get this. The beer wasn't great, but to eat a pizza with a beer brewed on the premises is a rare thing for a restaurant to do around here. Well done.
