Appearance - 3.5
A blossoming white head took me by surprise, spilling over the edge of the glass before I had drained the bottle. Straw coloured with definite chill haze, although this is more than made up for by its wonderful head, which proved to have excellent retention.
Smell - 3.0
Very odd aroma for a lager, simply based on smell I wouldn't have been surprised if this was a wheat beer. Pale malt sweetness, powdery husk, citrus and soap are all there. Not true to style, but I give it points for originality!
Taste - 3.5
Far more flavour than most Australian lagers, despite having less alcohol than Carlton Mid. Unfortunately, some of that flavour is soap, although thankfully the soapy flavour was mostly in the head. Biscuity pale malt, slightly fruity (grapefruit) and metallic with a pleasantly bitter, dry finish. Very refreshing.
Mouthfeel - 3.0
A little under carbonated, although smooth and light in the mouth.
Drinkability - 4.5
Just perfect for a summer's afternoon session beer, with enough flavour to keep most punters interested, and a driver friendly alcohol percentage.
OVERALL - 3.45
The existence of this beer (and Colonial's Amber Ale) means that the skipper can now enjoy himself on a Swan Valley brewery tour. Not a brilliant beer by any means, but one of the best from Bootleg, and definitely worth trying.
