Mastri Birrai Umbri "Queen Berry Sour Fruit Ale"
300ml brown glass bottle coded "Best before: L.62132342 19-03-2023" and sampled on 30-11-2022
3,50€ @ Eataly, Roma, IT
Notes: Brewed with barley, spelt (35%), and Aronia juice to celebrate International Womens Day on March 8th.
Look: A hazy orange body is capped by a finger's width of white foam. The head retention and lacing are both very good.
Smell: A combination of sweetish and grainy malt and non-distinct fruit greets you softly.
Taste: It's lightly sweet but also lightly tart, and quite berry-like without bringing any specific fruit to mind. It's mildy bitter but also dry with a lingering fruitiness.
Feel: Medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, slightly lower than standard carbonation.
Overall: While this beer is not 'juicy' the berry flavor is there and quite clear. I've personally never tasted an Aronia berry so I can't really describe it other than to say it's in the dark berry family. I found it refreshing and interesting, and although I wouldn't drink two of them in a row I could certainly go for one every now and then.
