508 Strong Ale, 16-oz bottle into tall snifter at 508 Restaurant, West SoHo, New York City.
Appearance: This beer looks like Double Bastard on steroids! Deep red/brown/chai-tea color. Super dark, hazy, intense. Great head: foamy, caramel-y and bubbly; lasts forever.
Smell: Surprisingly light for such a huge brew. Some cola, honey, bubblegum. A ton of booze and fire. Burnt sugar and ocean water at the end (huh?). Lot of malt, of course!
Taste: Again, Double Bastard (but not quite as good, as you can imagine). Malt, booze, caramel, syrupy sweetness. Dark wild honey. Overpowering alcohol, alas. Rather one-dimensional, which is something the American Strong Ale style seems to fall into more often than not. A bit of an oxidation/metallic touch at the end.
Mouthfeel: Full body and flavor, medium carbonation. Too syrupy and hot, gets a bit tiring after a while.
Overall: Not very drinkable, even if it is your only beer of the night. And this is a big drinker speaking here!
508 Strong Ale is hardcore shit, in both good and bad ways. I applaud them for brewing something like this in a place and a neighborhood that are more cocktails-and-Heineken than craft beer. But a little more balance and a little less alcohol would have done marvels to this brew. I will revisit it, though. Very much worthy.
