508 Lager, 16-oz bottle into tall snifter at 508 Restaurant, West SoHo, New York City.
Note: I asked for the 508 IPA and the bartender served me the 508 Lager. After reviewing the beer as an IPA, he realized he got me the wrong beer and I had to rethink my review.
Appearance: This lager comes looking real nice, dark and hazy, with a malty appearance that reminds of Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA, no less! A pretty massive and foamy head that dies quickly and leaves a rim and a bubbly mantle.
Smell: Wheat, spice, honey. Cloves, a bit of clear lemon, grass. A windy day in the open fields of Indiana. For a lager, this is quite a gorgeous nose!
Taste: Reminds me of a hoppy Hefeweizen and/or Lagunitas Little Sumpin'. Nice tartness and sourness. Spice and a sticky oily feeling all around. Lemony! A bit of cleaning product, in a good way. Hay and fresh grains. Mild and delicious sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Very carbonated and filling (a little too much so), clean and crisp but flavorful all around. Full body and flavor, pleasant, well rounded. Sparkly tingly finish.
Overall: Stunning! I'm no fan of lagers, but this is incredibly well-crafted and flavorful. 4.5% only?? Feels like a 7% double wheat, or one of the better German hefes! Drinks great and tastes great.
