500ml bottle served in a tulip. Reviewed from notes.
Pours pitch black with a .5 finger dark mocha head with poor retention. Lacing is spotty and sparse with average cling. Oily thick legs. Decent.
Nose is a heaping helping of coffee. Some notes of cocoa, roasted malt, chocolate, and liquorice hang out around the coffee. Moderately aromatic. Solid.
Tastes like it smells. Big coffee notes upfront with some hints of cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malt and liquorice. Balanced out by a mellow, creamy citrus hop note. Ends cocoa powder and liquorice. I like it.
Medium to full bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Oily, smooth and chewy in the mouth and goes down with a bit of bubbles. Finishes rather clean with a lingering, mellow aftertaste. Really drinkable with almost no noticeable alcohol presence.
This is a really under-the-radar imperial stout from a brewpub in NYC that almost no one talks about. Miles and miles better than anything Heartland has ever offered, this is definitely worth a try.

Montezuma! 16-oz bottle at 508 for $8 (listed at $12 in the menu, not sure what happened).
Appearance: Cool bottle/label and great presence, super dark black color, oily. Huge head, a fist! Too carbonated, but somehow it doesn't bother me. Great mocha head, frothy like a capuccino.
Smell: Coffee, rained-on hops, stickiness. Oxidation at the end (this is a bit of an issue throughout). Darkness, deliciousness. Roastiness and grain.
Taste: Almost 5.0. Lotsa chocolate, coffee, the usual suspects. Great hop base on the back. Love the tingly carbonation as it goes down. Sweet, roasty, flavorful. Oh my god! The only negative aspect of this beer (the metallic/oxidation touch) mellows out as the beer airs out, so it is all good.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation is great in the mouth. Full body, flavor, carb (obviously). This is how a perfect Imperial Stout ought to be! Rich, powerful, but not overwhelming. Tremendously balanced, a pleasure. Not too dry to boot, I love it.
Overall: Truly exceptional indeed. For a nanobrewery, this is fantastic. I had a Stone IRS the other day and was not so impressed. Montezuma kicked my butt! Rather drinkable as well, and just a delicious treat all around.

A real dark walnut brown body hits, nearly black, sitting on top is a real nice cococa brown head, creamy, coats and laces the glass wonderfuly while drinking.
Great nose on this brew, mild coffee roast, hot peppers and chocolate dark bitterness. Just great.
Palate matches the nose, but the body just doesn't quite hold up unfortunatly. Rolling dark bitter chocolate in the mid palate, with an almost jalapeno/chile finish. Roast character melds nicely giving a mix of somewhere between roast coffee and Mexican hot chocolate drink. Soothing brew. Body is just slightly wet though even for a RIS, doesn't bring the hint of richness that melds on the palate and the nose.
Overall, if this felt a little more rich, it would be flat out fantastic, but it's still a really dam good brew. It was perfect on a cold Sunday night when I was at the restaurant. If the other beers are made with this much care and attention I would love to try them all. Great beer.

What does an exceptional imperial stout look like? When poured from a bottle into a tulip it is black. Black as death. Flickering red flashes of hell fire. 508's Montezuma defies the fundamentals of high ABV surface chemistry and retains a head for a while, and its wispy lace as long as the beer lives in the glass.
Perhaps the appearance is helped by the beer's perfection of flavors and effortless drink-ability. It will not long stand in a glass. The seductive aromas of coffee and chocolate entice. The conversation of flavors is delightful. There's no gimmickry. It's a smooth and luscious stout with a medium body, and subtle notes of roasted barley, espresso, and a delightful compliment of chocolate notes. The stout is balanced appropriately with hops, but the flavors remain politely in the background. The beer delights in abundance of flavor, but does not celebrate excess.
508's Montezuma Imperial stout is a big beer with a subtlety rare to beers with more than 6% ABV. It is a simply stellar brew that i hope becomes a regular part of 508's winter line-up.
