I’ll admit that cream ales aren’t near the top of my list of favorite styles, but I try to approach each beer with an open mind and palate. I’ve also had a number of cream ales lately (oddly enough) to compare this one to and unfortunately I didn’t think this came out all that favorably. It’s not bad, it’s just a bit undistinguished.
Looks the part; clear, pale yellow body. The head was on the small side, however, falling rather quickly, but the lacing was extensive and has a nice creamy appearance. Grainy, lightly toasted malt in the nose, cereal-like aroma; faint floral hop; subtle but present sourness that’s out of place.
The flavor is pretty mild; moderately sweet and toasty malt; again with a cereal grain quality; vague hops, bitterness is low; overall a bit bland. Dries up in the finish fairly well. It certainly wasn’t overpowering, but there was definitely a minor sense of sourness and even dirtiness to this beer that was a little off-putting. That sounds bad, but it was faint enough to not totally wreck this beer.
Medium-light bodied with average carbonation. The feel was not as crisp as I’d have liked for this style. I wouldn’t go back for this one again but cream ale fans might want to give it a try.
