huge thanks to my parents for venturing to this brewery in their travels, picking up a mess of 19.2 cans, hauling them home, and saving them for my visit! it was awesome to try some random beer i may have never encountered otherwise, and i was quite impressed with most of them. this is a black currant belgian strong, more like a tripel to me than a quad, it lacks that malt depth and has some high tone estery sweetness through it, but delicious either way. the fruit is neat because it adds a little sharpness, a tannic thing and some light acidity to cut the sweetness of the base beer, which might be too much without this element, real complimentary in that way. pretty pink color to this too, a high head from the can, very fizzy and active, and it hides its alcohol well enough that i drink the whole large can to my head without a thought. as a belgian beer, its not amazing, in that the yeast is overly familiar and thus somewhat uninteresting, there really isnt much malt depth to this, its pale and even thin for what it is, and without the fruit, im not sure how dynamic it would be, but i dont want to be that critical here because the whole is quite fantastic, the fruit does a lot for it, gives it a light medicinal funk, a needed counterpoint to the underlying sweetness, and helps it finish clean for the style. i am thankful for all the carbonation, it makes this drink lighter than it is, but boy this one got my buzz on. its oddly summery and modern for a strong belgian style, and overall its fun more than it is serious, but it hits on a number of levels. this was among my favorites of the green room stuff my parents hooked up. really unique.
