There’s a lot of different hops out there to choose from. But it’s not often you find a hop with an aroma and flavor so intense, you have no choice but to name a beer after it. And for us, that’s this beer here. It’s a straightforward American Pale Ale with just a touch of vienna malt and an irresponsible amount of dry-hopping with the aforementioned hop. To truly enjoy this unique aromatic experience, don’t drink from the can, pour it vivaciously into your favorite glass…you’ll be glad you did.

I believe that I prefer calm moments over those with much aplomb. Like, I’ll take a gander if some fireworks are going off, but I’d rather gaze at an eagle in flight, or listen to a dove’s koo. And that’s where I’m at with DDH Citra. It is so restrained. It is so graceful. It is so… well, don’t you want to know? So I suggest you snag a can and take a sip.

Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: American Pale Ale
Glass: Monkish 16-oz. mug
Price: $13.99 for a 4-pack
From: Bristol Farms in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Purchased: Nov. 25, 2021
Consumed: Dec. 8, 2021
Misc.: Canned on Nov. 9, 2021
Picked up a 4-pack of this and a 6-pack of a Firestone milk stout on Thanksgiving. Had two of these before reviewing this, giving the first one a 4.00 on Untappd on Nov. 25 and writing “Smell is better than the taste but pretty good overall.” The second time I gave it a 4.25 on Nov. 28 and wrote “Tasting great tonight. Bumping to a 4.25 for now.” El Segundo’s website called it “There’s a lot of different hops out there to choose from. But it’s not often you find a hop with an aroma and flavor so intense, you have no choice but to name a beer after it. And for us, that’s this beer here. Poured a straw-to-pale yellow clear color with two fingers of frothy off-white head. Could see lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up the sides of the glass. Excellent foamy lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.50)
Smelled big Citra, grapefruit, lemon zest, pine, resin, Cascade, weed and grass. About as good from the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Taste wasn’t quite as good as the nose but still solid. In order got big Citra, grapefruit, lemon zest, woody Chinook, pine, resin, weed, grass, Cascade, berry and lingering peppery spice. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.00)
This was really good. Better than their original Citra beer. (Overall - 4.25)
