Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l’Ancienne) is a spontaneous fermentation beer, produced from the blending of 1, 2 and 3 years old lambics. It is unfiltered and unpasteurized, and refermented in the bottle for at least 6 months. The lambics used were fermented and oak aged in our installations. These lambics are coming from worts brewed by Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon breweries.

12/31/23 New Year's Eve with my DW. Purchased from Vintage Estate Wine and Beer Store in Boardman OH.

Aroma... Sour cherry, fermented.

Drawing and dry in the sourness... Granny Smith tart. Expected more fruitiness. Funk going on. No bad off odors or tastes. Fermented tones throughout.

This 2018-2019 labeled dark green bottle lists its ABV at seven percent, but everything else looks the same. After the muselet was removed and the bottle uncorked, the entire 12.7 fluid ounces were decanted into a clear pint glass. It's very aromatic, rich with lambic traits of yeasty sourness. There's a modest off-white head on top of a cloudy liquid that's darkly amber. There's a solid pleasant sourness that sustains for much of it's taste. However, the tannin-like bitterness that overpowers the sour makes a disappointing finish. It's not so much as to reduce the overall enjoyment of this brew by much and some acclimation to it helps. The good part of the taste references are apple cider vinegar, with a nice balance from the malt included. There's plenty of lovely glass lacing as a witness to the commendable mouthfeel this brings. It's a very good version of its style.

Best-by is 07-12-30. Neckband has 2020-2021. ABV 7%. No pop, hiss, or any noise upon removal of cork, but it's not still. This is first of this style that I've had so don't fully know what to expect for carbonation. Dry, tart and barnyard character with background barrel taste. Goes well with turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Copenhagen 27/6 2020. 75 cl corked bottle from Kviickly, Allerød. Simple dark blue label stating the name of the beer and the small light blue tree which is Tilquin's logo. The version I am drinking a 2017-18 version with an ABV of 7,0.

Pours unclear, golden yellow with a medium-sized white head. Fairly stable. Settles as thin laer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is intense and nicely balanced between af fruity sweetness and an austere, dry sourness. Green apples, citrus and unripe gooseberries. Vinegar sharpness.

Light carbonation. Thin, oily, slightly greasy, almost flat texture.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a strong, tart, sourness. Aftertaste is austere, acerbic and sour. Finish is bone-dry.

As a Lambic should be. Austere, dry and sour.

Clear, golden color with a weak, white head. Apple, lemon, and grapes in a funky aroma. Oak is very noticeable in a tart taste. Moderate acidity. Goes well in a warm time of the year.

Pours hazy orange with a yeast cloud that disperses below one inch of fluffy white head. Over the next couple of minutes, the head settles to a thin blanket, while yeast sediment drops to the bottom of a St. Hermes tulip glass.

High fruitiness during the pour turns sour up close. Fermented fruit and musty funk has strong notes of apple, grape, and pepper. Light warmth adds oak and earthiness.

The flavor is dominated by acidity and tartness. Sweetness is too light to bring any balance. The above aromatics are well displayed in equal proportion. Some old leather is added and the oak becomes strong with warmth. The finish is long and powerful, as it repeats the journey mentioned above.

It has a medium body and a texture of nylon. Alcohol is more prominent than suggested by the label. Carbonation is effervescent without being a nuisance.

This is a rustic and comforting beer with a sophisticated edge. It pairs well with contemplation and a crumbly, smoked Bleu cheese. The light smoke adds a pleasant counterpoint to the funky tartness of the beer, while the cream cuts the acidity.

Golden pour wiht almost no head; foam dissipated very quickly. Definitely some funkiness / hay on that aromatics. Flavor wise: very punchy, tart fruit flavors like green apple, white grape, and lemon zest. Also some notes of hay / cilantro. Overall great sour.

Cloudy peachy, but reviewed in low light. Thin trickle of bubbles that disipate in the middle of the glass.

Lemon zest, tart Smartie candy dryness, wet grass-maybe leaning toward cilantro

That cilantro is there with a generic flower behind a delightful tart and earthy bite, dry bite of subdued grapefruit and tannin in the finish. Just lovely!

Super dry and clean and slightly dense, perfect foelr the flavors

Marvelous!

I am drinking Oude Gueuze Tilquin à l'Ancienne from Gueuzerie Tilquin, Belgium, ABV 7.0%. It is spontaneously fermented and a blend of three old Lambics. Ingredients are water, malt, wheat, hops. It is fruity and tart but no fruit was added.

Look: semi-clear amber with a thin white head

Aroma: lemon, green apple, grapes

Flavor: lemon, green apple, white grapes, some funk/hay.

Body/Overall: light to medium body. It is delicious.

Poured from bottle into small tulip.

L: Body is amber in color and totally opaque. Little to no head whatsoever. Very little carbonation in appearance besides a few large bubbles clinging to the side of the glass.

S: Very vinous. Sour grapes. Tart. Fruit - crushed grapes, granny smith apple, sour berries.

T: Most forward notes are a tart bitterness and fruits. Fruit notes are apple and grape. A citrus note, maybe of lemon. Some barnyard funkiness but this takes a backseat to the acids and fruits. No hop character in my opinion. Very light on earth tones. Wet hay or wheat.

F: Sour and tingly feeling around the mouth. Finishes tart and clean, but there is a moment where it slightly dries the mouth similar to a red wine. Light bodied. Light to moderate carbonation.

O: Quite good and interesting. Not an everyday or sessionable beer choice obviously. Another comment suggested pairing with meats, cheeses, and jams which I think is a fantastic idea for a tart, dry lambic like this.

Poured from 12.7-ounce corked/caged bottle into a champagne flute. Clear golden-colored pour, with not much of a head to speak of. The world-class origins of this gueuze hint as to what's coming when you pop the cork. Barnyard funk, notes of herbal and wet grasses, tart fruit (white grape, apple), light tannins, moderate bitterness, and a crisp and dry finish. I could see this as an excellent table beer, but it is an incredible stand-alone sipper as well. I'm heading off to grab some aged cheese to test my table beer theory. Overall, world class all the way.

A: Pours with a light chilled haze at first. A golden/orange color. A bubbly white head forms and settles, then recedes to a ring in a moment.
S: Musty, and almost vinous like. Grapes, apples, peppery spice. A musty basement like funk and earthiness rounds everything out. Almost like hay in a basement ha.
T: Everything is so well balanced here. Starting off with a fruity tartness of apples and grapes, that make this almost like a dry cider, to the musty, funky, earthiness. The acidity and sourness builds towards the finish, and just a faint amount of woody flavors.
M/O: A medium body with effervescent carbonation. This is spritzy, and finishes wonderfully dry, with the perfect amount of puckering. This is a great Gueuze to sip on.

All around excellent. Not sure why I waited so long to try this one, as it is a blend of many of my favorite Gueuze breweries (Boon, Lindemans, Girardin and Cantillon). A classic and excellent example of the style.
