Style: American Blonde Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Anaheim Gold is a clear, deep golden color ale with a light body that goes down easy. This beer is well-balanced with a slightly sweet finish.

Anaheim Gold uses a unique ingredient, Gambrinus Honey Malt, known in Europe as "brumalt." Honey Malt is like no other malted barley we use. It is rich in simple sugars as a result of a germination and kilning cycle that is different than typical crystal malt production. Anaheim Gold pairs well with most foods. It especially shines with chicken and pork dishes. Keep some on hand to kick back with after work.

On-tap at the source itself, on to the beer:

The color is a little darker than the gold it's named after. On top sits a semi-creamy head which retains in adequate manner, and leaves some good lacing around. The aroma has a vague sweetness, and also some grain. And taste? There's a little more to it than the usual plain blonde ale. There's an accent of sweetness which gives the flavor of a watered down cream ale. A kiss of lemon is there. Overall, the flavor is slightly sweet with a touch of toasty grain. Little surprise of the mouthfeel; light bodied, though I prefer crisp carbonation over sudsy carbonation in this case.

In the world of golden ales, Anaheim Gold is an acceptable example of one. It's good as a thirst quencher on a warm day, which it was (85F) when I drank it.

On-tap at Anaheim Brewery

A: The pour is a golden amber color with a tall white head.

S: There is a light yeastiness to it along with some fruity esters. A bit of toasty malts (seems strange for a blonde ale), and a light breadiness. Very faint hop notes, perhaps some floral qualities.

T: A mild, but noticeable, hop bitterness to go along with the inexplicable toastiness. A light creaminess of caramel with a hint of fruity esters. Again, not much hop flavor, just a light floral note.

M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.

O: It wasn't awful, so that's good. But I wouldn't bother with it again.

On tap at Anaheim Brewery in Anaheim, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grass, and some mild hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a grassy flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that drinkable but nothing exciting.

Served in a tasting glass.

Pours a deep honey/amber color. About a finger of frothy white head. Lacing and retention are both good.

Really malt and slightly sweet cereal like nose. Biscuity and grainy smelling as well. Taste follows smell. Pretty malty, slightly sweet hop presence is extremely minimal (just a touch of bitterness). A bit of non descript fruity esters, and a cereal honey like sweetness.

Easy to drink, pleasing, pretty solid as far as blonde ales are concerned.

Sampled 7/31/2011 at the brewery.

Pours dark orange ( bordering on brown), clear, small white head that doesnt last nor does it lace. Way too dark for a "golden ale", not quite like the picture advertises.

Aroma is very mild but mostly malty, a touch nutty and flowery, and some honey, possibly some corn as well. Again all this is very subtle.

Flavor is also pretty light but easier to pick out the components than with the nose. The sweetness and light(ish) corn flavor are in the foreground followed by some malt, a floral quality, a fair amount of bitterness, and some (out of place) nuttiness and caramel.

Body is light/medium. Drinkable.
