Bottled 1/12/15.

Pours a murky crimson-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, roasted nut, and slight caramel aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, roasted nut, and burnt caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a nice balance of toast, nut, and caramel qualities that make this one quite easy to drink.

Serving type: bottle.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep amber color with a one finger head of pure white foam. The head fades rather fast leaving just a trace of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma of the beer is strongest of a caramel smell mixed with and some brown sugar and a decent sum of a nutty smell. Along with these smells comes notes of a more lightly toasted nature along with some notes of a light bready and slight herbal smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a rather strong caramel taste mixed with some lightly toasted bready flavors. Along with these tastes comes notes of a molasses and a bit of a citrus hop and a moderate nutty taste. As the taste advances the sweeter sugar flavors maintain their strength while the roast and citrus grow weaker. While the citrus hop dwindles it is replaced by a light herbal flavor, leaving a moderately sweet, but still smoother nutty taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the lighter side with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. For the lower abv. and the lightly toasted and sweeter flavor of the beer the carbonation and body are rather appropriate, with both making for a rather nice easy drinking feel that matches the taste profile well.

Overall – A fairly nice, sweeter and more modestly hopped amber, that still maintains a nice smoothness and easy drinking feel. Fairly good overall.

Drove up to Ventura for the afternoon when I was out in LA this last week, and this place was on my list to stop by. Most of their lineup was available, so I started with this one.

Came out a deep amber/copper color. Transparent. Small off-white head on top. Nose was grainy with a dry huskiness, mellow sweet aromas, and little vegetation. Good crisp mouth, characteristic of my experience with the style. Refreshing feel on the palate. Semi-sweet malts and faint caramel. This one had an unexpected bit of a hop kick that I rather enjoyed. Nothing harsh by any means, but added to the profile favorably. A nice refreshing brew, that I would be proud of if I were a local.

Consumed November 5th, 2011 at the brewery. Reviewed from notes.

Clear, copper hued beer with a nice white head.

Aroma is caramel and toffee malts.

Flavor is similar to aroma, with the addition of a light toasty/cracker flavor. Bitter (but only just barely) on the finish.

Mouthfeel is slightly prickly but otherwise unremarkable.

Good and drinkable beer in a style many brewers fail to explore. Samuel Adams Boston Lager is still the USA's yardstick in this style, and this example, while unflawed, does not dethrone that beer.
