Swingtop bottle, 2000.
Poured completely flat. The colour was opaque coffee/chocolate black, with some hazy suspended yeast.
Aromas of sherry, honey, yeast (marmite!). The flavours echo the aromas: lots of bitter marmite yeasty flavour, which I like a whole lot. Some sweet and sour fruit flavours up front; a malty, burned, woody flavour builds over time. I'd have a very difficult time believing this is actually 12%, if it weren't for punch it packs -- I can't really taste it at all. I don't find a lot of hops in this at all.
In the mouth, it feels fairly rich, though the lack of carbonation is a bit unsettling.
Overall, I find it tasty and interesting. I think the swing-top bottle was a poor choice, if it was in fact to blame for the lack of carbonation. If I find any more Hagar barleywines of a different year, I'll try them -- maybe the carbonation issue will be resolved. I probably won't pick up another one of these though, at least not at the price they're sold for out here.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
