12oz bottle from LambicPentameter (thanks!). Served in a Barrel and Barley teku. Enjoyed 6/20/18.
Pours chocolate brown with a half finger cap of manilla foam.
Chocolate malt, caramel and some bread on the nose.
Tastes of burnt toast, bakers chocolate, caramel and a little pine.
Fairly light body with tingling carbonation. Burnt chocolate toast in the finish.
A pretty nice brew from Witch’s Hat. Edward’s Portly Brown is a less hoppy American brown that goes down quite easily.

Served on tap at the pub. Deep, dark brown color with a collar of foam. Aromas of brown sugar, baker's cocoa, caramel, roast. Nice rich flavors of cocoa, nutty grain, caramel, dark toast, brown sugar, with floral/herbal hop finish. A little on the thinner side. Definitely worth a second shot.

Alright brown beer with some chocolatey, malty, syrupy, caramel notes but too watered down for full enjoyment. But good beer for November or rainy cloudy day.

On tap at Lake Street Tavern.
A dark brown color with a small tan head.
Sweet malt aroma, a little chocolate.
The taste followed the nose: caramel malt and a bit of chocolate.
An average brown ale.

Short Review. Just by the name I thought this might be a more robust Brown Ale, but it seems to be more on the lighter side of the style, with some nice caramel malt flavors coming through and just a little more hops than most Brown Ales, it's not bad, but it's pretty standard for the style and it isn't to memorable, it's decent.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 11/16/2015. Pours clear very dark reddish brown color with 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, toffee, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light pine, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and slightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good American brown ale. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Tastes of rich, roasty malt and black coffee. Very tasty. Would like to try it again.
