Our barrel-aged version of Blot Out The Sun returns each December to coincide with the darkest days of the year. Spending over a year in WIllet bourbon barrels, this massive Imperial Stout extinguishes all light with notes of chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar and whiskey notes from the extended barrel aging." "Since the dawn of time it has been mankind's dream to blot out the sun". - C. Montgomery Burns

3 Floyds Brewing Co. "Barrel-Aged Blot Out The Sun"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, seemingly without production codes or freshness dating
$4.99 @ Di Bruno Bros., Phila., PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: The body is an opaque black with just the thinnest thread of clear dark mahogany brown showing along the base of the glass. The head is a half-inch of creamy brown foam. The aroma is rich with sugar, caramel, cocoa, coconut, dried dark fruit, and alcohol. How strong is this? - 11.4%, which makes sense. The flavor is fuller and more complex. I'm getting dark chocolate, brown sugar, oak, golden caramel, black raisins, rum, whiskey, some Ovaltine, dried red cherries, and an ashen roastiness. It's very nicely rounded and balanced, and more importantly, very clean. The alcohol is no more present than it should be IMHO and helps to balance it. It's medium-full in body and gently zesty, perhaps in part because of all of the alcohol, and that's fine because this is definitely a sipper.

12oz bottle. No dating information found.
Black colored body, with a thin red mahogany back lit edge. One thin finger of mocha colored head, but this releases back to thin islands and a thin ring. Any lacing tends to sink down into the body.
Aroma of bourbon barrel and oak, along with roasted malts, and a bit of black licorice.
Taste is a delicate complex of flavors - roasted malts, brown sugar, bourbon barrel and oak. Hint of chocolate and cherry. Blended flavors in the aftertaste.
More than medium mouthfeel. Smoother texture, low bitterness. Okay carbonation.
Subtle brew with a balanced taste profile.

12oz bottle served in a tulip. Bottle seems to have been dated 2022 - 13.8%. @ovaltine sent it to me in NBS BIF #18.

Pours black with very little head. Smell is roast coffee, burnt raisins, maybe anise, maybe molasses. Roasted nuts.

Taste is dark roast, light cherry syrup. Dark chocolate. Let's go back to the molasses. Maybe some vanilla,, definitely boozy, but not overwhelmingly so.

Mouthfeel is a little bit on the thin side -- for the style, at least, by no means thin in the overall realm of beer. Overall...it's not bad, it's definitely not stellar. It's a pretty good barrel aged stout.

Barrel-Aged Blot Out The Sun pours black with a very small, tan head. The aroma is mild, with hints of almond. The flavor has notes of almond and whiskey. It has a good feel. Overall, it is a big beer, yet very approachable and sneaky. Sweet and rich.

Pours black, settles black in the glass, and truly blots out the sun, with the body of the beer propping up a creamy mocha colored head that provides a surprising amount of lacing and a nice cap on the beer. Gorgeous BA impy stout.

The nose is a beautiful combination of the bourbon barrel (which is significant), stone fruit aromas (dark cherries and plums), and milk chocolate. I am shoving my nose into my glass like it’s a sponge to soak up this behemoth of a stout.

As you sip this beer, your beer nerd senses are subjected to the onslaught of flavors from the barrel (loads of bourbon and oak) and the base beer (milk chocolate, dark cherries, plums, and a nice little toffee note at the back of the palate, along with a nice warming from the barrel), and it all fits together perfectly. World class stuff here.

The mouthfeel is big and creamy, as expected. What a treat this beer is.

A - Pours pitch black with a one finger creamy tan head. Light soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, brown sugar and bourbon.

T - The taste is dark chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, caramel and finishing with a big warming bourbon finish.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with crisp drying finish.

O - This big stout. The bourbon tends to overpower the rest of the flavors.

L: Pours a thick, chocolate-colored brew that forms a thin tan espresso head, which is quick to dissipate. Cloudy tan retention remains and a nice ring of lacing around the edge of the snifter formed. Held to the light, this beer has an opaque, nutty umber hue.

S: Bourbon barrel right out of the gate, followed by oak, medium-roast coffee, charred malts, burnt sugar, molasses, cacao nibs, and a hint of vanilla.

T: Heavy heat influence from the bourbon barrel, with plenty of oak and vanilla. Also detecting cacao nibs, baker's chocolate, malts, char, and bitter coffee roast. Traces of burnt sugar, smoke, and wood. Whiskey burn and hops towards the finish.

F: Medium-bodied, oily and coating, slightly chewy. Mild carbonation.

O: A very strong BBA imperial stout base, plenty of boozy heat and a smattering of hops, very nice malt flavor profile. No clear weaknesses. Will be returning to this beer in the future.

Pours a deep, dark brown. Aroma is very much roasted malts, nice amounts of vanilla, chocolate and bourbon. Taste is a wonderfully balanced combination of the chocolate, roastiness, barrel notes, bourbon, vanilla with hint of coffee/espresso. Medium to full mouthfeel & very smooth. Outstanding stout.
