Notes: Our latest barrel-aged imperial stout hails from a battle-filled planet from the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Weighing in at a hefty 15.6% ABV, Cocomungo was aged with toasted coconut and maple syrup after spending a year in Willett bourbon barrels. Expect layered flavors of maple syrup, toasted coconut and rich chocolate backed by whiskey and oak notes from the barrel-aging process.

Tan head that fades. Black color.

Big coconut and nice barrels. Chocolate, fudge, caramel, oak, vanilla, and maple. Warming, smooth, boozey but in a good way. Can’t believe how much barrel and coconut is here for a $6 bottle.

Full bodied, but not super thick. Which was expected for the price point. Well done.

Brief Review:

O: 3 Floyd's are just killing it lately with these releases. They seem to put out more new one-offs than Short's these days! Coming back with another gigantic BA stout here. The coconut is a bit sweet for me, very rich. Huge ABV is hidden well, not too boozy. Could use more barrel, I think. Very syrupy. Overall a decent beer from 3 Floyd's.

Recommendation: Not their best BA work as of late, but still a very decadent dessert beer that's worth trying.

Kinda ticked, the label does not mention maple syrup. I would have passed if it did. Oh well, let's see what we have here.

The chocolate-y base stout is great and while the barrel notes aren't overly strong they are rich and well incorporated, most prominent up front. I get a nice lingering coconut note at the finish. In the middle the maple syrup starts off nice enough but then gets strong enough to be a distraction, at least to my taste. Good beer overall.

The color is pitch black, with no foam. The smell has a very strong coconut ambiance, with bourbon, fudge, vanilla, and a bit of graham cracker. The taste has has a stronger fudgy black licorice and bourbon flavor, with coconut on the back end. Sweet, but not too sweet. It is very well-balanced. I was surprised. I thought the coconut flavor would take over, like the strong coconut scent indicates. The beer is 15.6% ABV, but it hides the alcohol well. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick, full, and oily. Overall, I am quite impressed with this beer. I was expecting a pastry stout, but it is a well-done BA stout, with a touch of coconut sweetness.

Pours a foamy fizzy small brown head with lower retention, great legs, inky black beer that stains the glass a bit

Nose brings loads of dark roasted malt, dark dark chocolate, cocoa, some fruity notes from a RIS like fruit, but also a mild coconut, buttery oak, rich vanilla, touch of whiskey like character, coffee, fudge, little baking spice

Taste brings loads of heavy malt, roasted malt, cocoa and more very dark chocolate, a bit of fudge and coffee ice cream, creamy chewy like, a hint of char and coffee, baking spices, rich vanilla and a bit of buttery oak, a mild bourbon sweet flavor, as well as mild coconut and general fruity esters, mild perfumey smooth alcohol, mild bitterness that increases to a med bitterness from roast and mild spicy hop character, finishes thick and a bit syrupy, coats the mouth, more bitterness, bourbon and a bit more alcohol

Mouth is fuller bod, rich chewy, thick, med warming alcohol that gets a touch tingly, med-lighter large bubble carb

Overall pretty nice, wish the coconut was more and bourbon as well, but smooth for a very heavy rich stout

Strong maple and coconut flavors, with a warming bourbon finish. Actually quite balanced; I didn't find this too heavy despite the ABV. Overall a very fun imp stout that I'd gladly try again,

Overall great barrel aged stout. Love bourbon barrel aged stouts. Love coconut stouts. This one has both and they complement each other nicely. Pours black as nice. Not an overwhelming aroma. But massive bourbon and coconut taste. Sweet but not too sweet. Just a touch of alcohol burn. Not as thick as the ABV wound suggest.

The sweetness of the maple plays nicely with the roasted malt and bourbon. A slight hint of coconut in the background.I liked this as it was lite on the coconut flavor and more roasted malt focused.

Cocomungo is almost everything I am looking for, but not quite. The quality of the ingredients stands out: maple syrup and chocolate balance out the oaky Willett bourbon barrel quite effectively. Then there is a low level coconut flavor permeating the background. Tastes nice and is surprisingly easy to sip for such a high ABV. Ultimately there is something about the combination of flavors that left me thinking the whole is somehow less than the sum of the excellent parts.

Bottled 2022. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip.

Pours almost black; small khaki head that fades leaving decent retention and lacing.

The aromas have a nice blend of bourbon and chocolate. Malts are there. The aromas really open up as it warms a bit.

The flavors are bold and rich. Lots of chocolate, especially milk chocolate. Some chocolate chips as well. The maple syrup lowkey shines. The coconut is subtle and balanced but doesn't go unnoticed. Vanilla comes through. Some oak and wood in the mix. The bourbon definitely comes through and accentuates everything. Subtle sweetness. Low bitterness. Malts do their thing. The alcohol is slightly noticeable and it finishes a little warm, but the alcohol is also ultimately well hidden on the other hand when you consider the higher ABV.

Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's slightly sharp, slick and slightly sticky.

This is a really good barrel-aged stout. It's big, bold and flavorful. The coconut might not come off as the star and ultimately gets lost in the sauce, but it still comes through. The maple syrup takes this one to the next level. The craftsmanship is on point. Well done.

Stark to matte black with a puffy burnt mocha foam head of moderate height that fizzles out to a central milky way galaxy film surrounded by a fine chain.

Oh damn. First sip--hell, first whiff--and I'm immediately struck with the notion that 5 years ago this would have been a hype generator. 10 years ago beer geeks would have quickly rendered this an unobtainum ghost whale. I was not expecting THAT much barrel AND freshly toasted coconut. The coconut Dark Lord variants aren't even this good.

Oak and malt are both nutty with a touch of ash and splinter before an absolute bomb of just perfectly browned coconut flake explodes. Taste is a little more savory than aroma, with chocolatey cacao qualities masking any boozy heat before exhaling fucking macaroon latte. WTF?! Absolutely delicious!

The medium body has a fine, firm carbonation that finishes semi-dry with no heat at all despite numbing the tongue after the semi-dry finish.

I honestly didn't expect this to exceed the bar they set with Crushing Mass, but to surpass several Dark Lords as one of FFF's best barrel aged stouts yet is something else entirely.

Smooth bourbon & spicy rye whiskey, dark chocolate, caramel, & roasty malt. Finishes with lots of coconut and a hint of maple. No booze burn; definitely drinks lower than listed abv. Hefty stout, but not pastry thick.

Pours as black as 3 am - this is a “no light” zone - with a creamy tan head. The nose features boozy, oaky barrel notes, some char and dark chocolate, and a significant coconut aroma. O. M. G.

The taste has a nice boozy flavor up from, with oak leading the way, but the oak quickly gives way to a rich dark chocolate flavor that is stunningly delicious, and gives way to the roasted coconut flavor. This is Dark Lord without the Indian sugar. IJS.

The mouthfeel is rich and creamy, perfect for this big beer that is definitely an imperial stout, but features some pastry stout attributes. World class stuff, IMHO.
