On tap.

Pours a cloudy mahogany color with a thick tan head. Lots of retention and lacing. Aroma and taste share a lot with their lighter Weizen, but with a much stronger roasted malt background. I enjoy this beer when its on tap - I prefer it to the lighter version except on a hot summer day.

Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

A malt-forward dunkelweizen, heavy medium intensity caramel and bread-like sweetness and flavor, as well as some minor yeast notes, including the expected banana ester and phenolic spiciness. I'm unfamiliar with another beer in the dunkelweizen style like this one, making it unique, interesting, and within style to still be counted as part of it. I might pick another bottle of this up if in the mood; the price is certainly right at $2.50 per half liter.

Head of 2.5cm in height, good retention of several minutes, lingering 0.2cm cap atop body of beer. Lacing is good, not excellent, a few large dots along with some smaller ones cling to the sides of the glass. Body is dark brown in color, light brings out light brown hues and orange tints around the edges. Carbonation visible through the very hazy body (70-75% opacity), moderate in number, high in activity.

Aroma of light caramel-like and toasted bread scents, sweetness. Not unpleasant, not particularly complex or deep.

The overall flavor composition is of medium-dark caramel-like sweetness, a bit of light cola, and lightly toasted bread atop a backdrop of mild banana ester and slighty spicy phenols. Front of palate tastes moderately dark caramel-like sweetness, slight cola, light toasted bread flavor. Mid-palate experiences continued medium dark caramel-like sweetness, toasted bread, very faint banana ester, yeast, and vanilla. Back of palate tastes dark caramel sweetness, toasted bread, slight cola, light phenolics, banana, and vanilla. Aftertaste of medium dark caramel-like sweetness, toasted bread, light banana ester and vanilla.

Beer is medium to medium-light in body, with carbonation of light intensity, resulting in a lightly foamy (2/5), otherwise smooth (3/5) feel that's good for this beer, not watery, and within typical guidelines for the style. Closes semi-dry, with moderate stickiness lingering on the palate and lips.
