Mad River Brewery, one of the first tribally owned breweries in history continues to honor a 30+ year legacy of brewing best- quality beers while expanding efforts to raise awareness of important endeavors tied to water, land, and justice. Maize Goddess Indigenous Ale is a tribute to the strength, power, and resilience if women, and a celebration of Indigenous cultures across the world. Maize Goddess represents the life-givers, the women who were traditionally leaders of our Tribes and villages. With a subtle hop aroma and touch of sweetness from flaked Maize sourced from Ioway Farms, this ale promotes regenerative agriculture and intertribal commerce.

My first from Mad River and my first from an established micro owned by Native Americans. I'm impressed by the awards they've won and that they survived 30+ years. I went on their website to get their story that was not on the label. They do lots of Good Guy stuff like sustainable brewing practices and, uniquely, source their corn from a tribe in Iowa. Maize Goddess also recognises the higher role women had in some societies and probably should have in ours. (Women certainly can't run the world any worse.) So for all this uniqueness and diversifying the micro-world, I give Mad River excellent Overall Hugs.
As for Maize Goddess... interesting and appreciated by this malt-head. While it doesn't produce much foam, it stays active and Looks a light amber. Smells are average, mostly malt from adjunct... but corn should be given more respect in brewing. Tastes are balanced, albeit a bit sweet... so add some more Northwest hops for those heads. Soft, but on the light side of medium-mouthed.

Overall, this is a pretty unimpressive ale. Thin, imbalanced, and tasting of cheap grains. I like the concept, but the execution is sorely lacking.
Nice golden color, head is thin and short-lived.
Nose is heavy on the apple juice and a good bit of tortilla chips.
Taste is sweet malts, cooked corn, and some vegetal bitterness.
Mouth feel is crisp but a little watery
