Review from notes on a draught pour taken @ Denver Beer Co. in Summer 2012.
APPEARANCE: No real head - just a beige colour floating ring. Retention was so awful there was no time to note any further characteristics of the (lack of) head.
Body colour is pale gold. Not a great execution of a rauchbier in terms of appearance. No yeast is visible wtihin; appears filtered.
AROMA: Light bacon, roast, clean malts, and hints of caramel. No overt smokey or ashy notes. Rather timid aromatically for a rauchbier. Very mild.
No yeasty flavours, overt alcohol, or off-flavours are detectable.
TASTE: Bacon. Timid roast. Has a clean malt foundation. Probably the most simple boring rauchbier I've ever tried. Restrained; not at all bold or assertive.
Very timid and reticent. Lacks any complexity or subtlety whatsoever; very plain with a shallow depth of flavour.
Poorly built, but not terribly imbalance.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, clean, overcarbonated. A bit too thick and heavy on the palate given its lack of flavour. Mundane execution.
Not oily or gushed.
OVERALL: Uninspired simple fare. Not at all a good rauchbier; there just isn't fundamental commitment to the smoked malt. I wouldn't bother with this again, and it's difficult to drink given its obvious overcarbonation. Nevertheless, it's not terrible outside of style conventions...regarded as just a roast malt-emphatic German beer it's decent.

Pours a finger of dirtied white head over a cloudy peach-colored liquid. Smells tame overall. Beefy smoke and nutmeg, very old cedar fence, wet paper, and very light citrus. A little bit like a Gose-styled beer. Tastes robust fruit-wood smoked malt, oranges, and sun-baked wood. Almond and apricot esters (not good for a lager styled beer). Dry malt, wetting esters, sharp carbonation, light in the mouth, and mild alcohol. Simply gets across the idea of a rauchbier. Great way to introduce people to the style without overwhelming them with complexity.
