Reviewed from notes taken Summer 2012.
On-draught @ Denver Beer Co.
APPEARANCE: Head dissipates within 8 seconds (I saw the head when it was poured but by the time it reached the table there was nothing left). Awful retention, obviously.
Body colour is a solid nontransparent nontranslucent black.
AROMA: Caramelized dark malts, roasted barley, creaminess, caramel.
A somewhat appealing aroma of mild intensity.
TASTE: Dark malt sweetness, caramel, reticent roast, and some light creaminess up front. As simple a stout as you'll ever find; very rudimentary but decently balanced. Build is okay. Lacks complexity and subtlety. Very basic and even amateurish, as if brewed from one of those homebrew kits.
TEXTURE: Smooth and wet where it should be coarse and dry to bring out the roast. Needs more creaminess and softness. Overcarbonated. Too thick on the palate for its lack of flavours.
Far from well-executed given the (intended) style.
OVERALL: Drinkable but unremarkable. A boring simple stout. Very uninspired work from Denver Beer Co., but it's one of their better (less bad?) brews. Might be better on nitro draught. I wouldn't bother with it again, but it's average.
