I've had a few beers from them and wasn't too impressed so I bought this one to see if they could handle brewing a BBA Barleywine. Logical thing for me to do, eh?
Nice dark brown colour, minimal head of foam and retention. Still, it looks the part.
The smell has huge caramel malt aromas which I am digging. Bourbon is substantial but not overpowering. Bits of dark fruits, some toffee but that caramel is so inviting.
The taste is very good but doesn't live up to the smell. The caramel malt is big but the Bourbon is just as big, taking away some of the malty goodness. Toffee, and to a lesser extent dark fruits, are present and add some good complexity. Being 13.5% abv...yeah, it's kinda hot but it's not like I am gulping it. I see on the label that it is a 2017 gold medal winner at the GABF Pro-Am competition. Well, I can see why as the more I sip, the more I like.
This is full bodied all the way and the aftertaste lasts for ages.
I do believe that I will buy more; I've seen it locally in a number of stores.
