Mandrill is our nod to the forefathers of the IPA style. The light fruit notes from the malt and dry hops conjure memories of classic English IPA’s while the resinous bitter notes and deep citrus aromas remind us of the Pacific Northwest. This beer is hop driven, but not solely a hop delivery vehicle. It is deceptively easy to drink at 7.3%, a So Cal twist we did not want to sacrifice.

Draft into a pint glass at Monkey Paw Pub and Brewery on Aug. 26, 2012 ( for $4.50) in San Diego, Calif. Poured a hazy orange with thick, white head. Good wet, foamy retention all around

Smelled citrus hops, mainly lemon and grapefruit. Also some sweet floral notes. Good whiff overall.

Taste reminded me of Manzanita’s IPA. Very bitter. Light citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon zest and orange peel.

Light-to-medium body. Thinner, but somewhat creamy finish. Above average-to-average carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

A decent IPA, but not great. I’d probably try it again, though.

On tap at URGE for the Monkey Paw North County Launch Party. Transparent gold with two fingers of white foam. The nose possesses notes of tangerine, grapefruit, and orange. The citrus is bright and aromatic. Floral characteristics are evident, and I detect some pine. Malt is faint and slightly crackery. I get a little grassiness. Smells nice Flavor is citrus forward with juicy orange and tangerine notes. Grapefruit rind makes an appearance. Malt is faint. Upper moderate bitterness with a touch of alcohol. There's a pervasive pine resin profile. The mouthfeel is dry and crisp, really nice. The body is upper light with upper medium carbonation. A good IPA. Looking forward to having this again.
