Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. can into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.
A: Fairly clear but a darker gold with a low amount of visible carbonation. A thin white head rises but quickly falls to spotty foam on the top.
S: Blood orange flesh mixed with lemon rind. Some lactic acid tartness, and a mild funk on top of biscuity malts. Some tropical fruits, citrus and resinous hops. There’s some harsh metallic notes too, at least when this is cold.
T: Tart and juicy sour citrus up front with some funk again. A dialed back barnyard funk, modest lactic tart and blood orange acidic pulp mixed with citrus and tropical fruit hops. Biscuit malts add sweetness without caramel. A drying sour and grassy citrus hop bitterness with the tart blood orange in the hang.
M: The body is towards the heavy side for an APA. Low alcohol presence, and a carbonation sensation a bit lower than expected.
O: The label describes this as a "Sour Pale Ale", so I'm of the opinion that this should be listed as an American Pale Ale (APA). As it straddles some style lines (albeit intentionally), I decided to not submit a style correction request. Either way, it's not a bad beer, though certainly not within sniffing distance of Hop Savant (or locally around here, Green Bench's The Surrealist). I guess it’s something different in cans to have around, but I don’t think I’d seek out another opportunity. The moro fruit is a difficult one to work into beers and have it come out right, I think. But the sourness is present without being particularly acidic, and the light funk is a nice touch.

Can poured into pint glass. Light sour notes to nose. I'm not a sour beer guy but this is light; balanced and easy to drink.
