650ml bottle - made with pomegranates (obviously), and molasses, y'know, 'cause it's supposed to be dark!
This beer pours a clear, dark (natch) auburn-tinted brown colour, with four fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves a bit of sheet lightning pattern lace around the glass as it gently subsides.
It smells of grainy and crackery wheat malt, crusty brown sugar, an indistinct earthy fruitiness, estery yeast, a faint sour funkiness, muddled peppercorns, and some very tame leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser wheat cracker thing, pomegranate juice, brown simple syrup, some ethereal yeastiness, mixed pepper mill dust, a hint of free-agent smoke, and more well-understated earthy, musty, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly active in its palate-pinging frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and sort of smooth, as the yeast injects a few minor unpleasantries at this particular juncture. It finishes off-dry, the mixed malt, fruit, and sugar all leaning into that lingering curve.
Overall - this is an enjoyable enough augmentation of the base style, with the adjuncts applied judiciously, and evenly. Tasty, with the yeast keeping me on my toes, but never becoming too aggressive. An interesting offering from this Jack of all trades brewing concern.
