Every ingredient used to craft this refreshing beer has travelled 24 miles or less from farm to brew kettle. First, water from the Sooke reservoir is blended with barley, grown and malted locally by Mike Doehnel. Then we added a pile of Cascade hops from Vic Davies Saanich farm and fresh blueberries from Farmer Phil. All this deliciousness was activated by Yeast Wrangler Ben’s unique house-strain of ale yeast and you are off to the flavour races. You might want a bib for this one, as there is a certain shirt-staining potential from all those berries.

Thanks to DaftCaskBC for sliding me this brew. Poured into straight pint glass. Poured a clean, clear red (almost cranberry) color with about a half-inch of pinkish-purple head that had OK retention and lacing.

On opening and pouring the beer, there was a noticeable, but not overpowering, blueberry scent. With a closer sniff you can pick up the base grains and malt in the background, but that blueberry is dominant. Over the tastebuds, it was solidly blueberry. When I really focused, I could detect the malts, but this was like drinking blueberry juice. Which I like. And, as you might expect, the beer was on the sweet side.

The body was mostly good and crisp, but did have a bit of a sticky-sweet finish. Drinkability was good, but I would have had a hard time finishing a 22 by myself (thanks to OKComputer for drinking this one with me). Overall, a pretty good beer, if you like the sweeter fruit beers. If you don't, this probably won't be your mug of beer. Certainly worth trying if you get the chance.

Appearance. Pours a deep pinkey-orange-purple with a finger of frothy, light pink head that lasts a while and leaves some decent lacing.

Smell. Toasted light grains and caramel with a little sour berry. Smells really good.

Taste. Tangy blueberry and rasberry(??), caramel and a little light grain. Just a hint of hops getting through. Crisp and very refreshing, not too sweet.

Mouthfeel. On the fuller side of a light body with medium carbonation.

Overall. Really nice and refreshing fruit beer. I'm glad I have another one!!

Purple-y with a light pink head. Sweet malts, big blueberry blast, and citrus hops.

Lightly sour blueberry flavour, with noticeable creamy, toffee-ish malts. Light hop bite to it. Very pleasant, and quite refreshing. Sweet-ish aftertaste. Nice, smooth body - lightly oily feel to it.

Really nice beer, and once again Phillips doesn't disappoint.

A: 1/2" extremely light purple head that left a nice lacing over purple liquid with excellent clarity.

S: Blueberries, citrus hops and a lot of yeast.

T: Citrus hops up front which transitions to a finish which tastes mostly of yeast, and some blueberries.

M: Medium viscosity and a high level of very fine carbonation.

O: I personally really enjoyed this beer, and knew it was a matter of time before a smart local brewer took advantage of all of the local fruit. Very easy drinking, a must try.
