This fresh-hop Marzen pours a pristine and rich burnt gold, with a pillowy white head. Lightly filtered, this old-world lager has an alluring malty aroma with a touch of spicy hops. An assertive but balanced bitterness counters the bready malt character from the traditional European Vienna malt. Through the middle, the fresh cascade hops from VQH farms begin to shine. They bring forth floral and spicy notes along with fresh-cut grass and citrusy lemon. Picked fresh in Eden Ontario, these wet-hops lend a unique and distinct element to this traditionally malt-forward lager bier. Crisp, but with a rich malt body, this lager is loaded with flavour but satisfyingly easy to drink.

Appearance: Poured with a thumb of head that did manage to retain decently as well and producing some minor lacing. The body is a very bright bronze which seems to leaning very hard into brassy yellow.

Smell: Oddly enough I get a whiff of smoke as the dominant scent with grassy hops and caramel malt notes in the background. It didn't really need any warming to come out and the potency is decent.

Taste: I want to say outright this beer is good, but really the level of hops here are way out of whack for a marzen. That said, the brewer has been pretty clear this is meant to be a bit hoppier so I'll give it a pass. Caramel malt that I really wish had more of a presence that turns to grass and floral hop notes.

Mouthfeel: It's very crisp, I will give it that. The hops do a great job of cleansing the palate here without getting out of control. I can't help shake though that there is a much bigger malt background struggling to get free here, and it's what's keeping the hops under control. Carbonation is solid and helps out the entire beer.

Drinkability: On the lighter end of medium body, and an excellent easy drinker to have for squeezing that last blast of warm fall air before the cold takes over and we start cozying up to our stouts.

Final Thoughts: This beer is well done and well made, but part of me laments it, as I normally expect a bit more malt in a marzen and less hops, and this strikes me as the marzen of the hop addicted IPA drinker. That said, this was a lovely, well balanced showcase of hops, done in a crisp lager, which is a bit of a welcome change from a pale ale doing it. Certainly worth drinking regardless of where you fall on this opinion scale. Thumbs up.
