Appearance: Poured with a mild finger of head that did not lace or retain very well, the body is a deep chestnut brown with slight crimson hints. A respectful amount of steady carbonation can be found in the body.
Smell: Malt, plum, pear, sour apple and sourdough make for a very complex nose that doesn't require any warming to reach a very nice level of potency.
Taste: Starts with mild toffee and plum with a slight lemon sour note that turns the the more cider like pear and sour apple notes that that ends with a sourdough touch and a bit of dry fruit yeast reminiscent of apricot.
Mouthfeel: This beer has a double but mild sour note which is a bit peculiar and comes off as a bit bumpy for the initial transitioning between flavors. Also the carbonation does leave something to be desired. That said, the dry yeast end does a good job of cleansing your palate a bit leaving you with a bit of apricot and a slight toast and bitter zest kind of aftertaste that is unique.
Drinkability: Lighter side of medium body, manages to walk a nice balance between a special treat to be save and something a bit easier to drink. Settles down very nicely and really a pleasant experience.
Final Thoughts: While it doesn't taste much like it, this drinks like the mid-point between refreshing white wine and heavier, more flavorful tannin red, only as a beer. It has that high end belgian vibe to it, but the sour parts kind of mellow it out. That said, I suspect I would have enjoyed it with that sour presence gone and the dry yeast backed up just a bit. Still a great offering regardless, and worlds better and more interesting then the blonde of this year. Thumbs Up.
