Czech Style Dark Lager - Inspired by my trips to the Czech city of Prague and the historic U Fleku brewpub, Fire Glow is a Czech inspired dark lager. Rich and malty it has a very deep, brown almost black colour with a pillowy tan head. Robust flavours of toasted bread, with hints of roasted malt and caramel can be found throughout with a spicy saaz hop finish. Lagered for 8 weeks, Fire Glow is malty, smooth and has a relatively low ABV, which makes it a very drinkable lager.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jan 8 2026 and served barely chilled.

Pours a deep, clear mahogany brown colour, taking on more of a brick red hue when illuminated. It's topped with two inches of fluffy, foamy, cream-coloured head that lasts for at least five minutes, steadily dropping down to a thick, frothy collar and a thin cap. Fantastic lace deposition - looks great so far. Understated yet alluring aroma of roasted malts, toasted bread and caramelized sugars, with suggestions of cocoa, spicy hops and an exceedingly faint touch of smoke.

A very smooth & balanced tmavĂ˝/dark lager: I'm tasting toasted bread, caramel and roasted malts, the latter imparting hints of cocoa and burnt grain. Spicy, grassy hops crop up late in the sip, concluding with more roasted malts, caramel and some ashiness; the aftertaste is relatively dry for the style. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, somewhat silky mouthfeel that makes for a very crushable dark lager.

Final Grade: 3.91, a B+. I think Sawdust City's Fire Glow is a very solid dark lager - though, as a BA with only six previous Czech dark lager reviews to my name, I don't think I'm comfortable saying that this is a definitively excellent tmavĂ˝. What I *do* know is that I enjoyed this beer, I'd buy it again, and I'd encourage other dark lager-loving BAs to give it a shot, as well. Glad to see this style becoming more accessible: for a long time, your choices were Budvar Dark or bust. However, a number of Ontario breweries, including Sawdust City, have slowly but surely been filling that gap on the shelves.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from the University Ave. West LCBO in nearby downtown Windsor. My second beer from the Gravenhurst, ON brewery.
