Regular Coffee - Nitro

Pours a lightly foggy copper-orange with visible particle suspension. Bubbles slowly rise around the edge of the glass and feed a finger of off-white, foamy head that retains almost indefinitely. Aroma is medium-roast, medium-bodied coffee, toffee, sugar, creamer, and nutty, bready, earthy malts. Nice dynamics, with coffee right at the front. Not a hint of alcohol in the nose. Flavor profile is medium-roast, medium-bodied coffee that has a little bit of fleshy, fruit to it. Coffee mingles with light creamer and sugar to form a toffee note. Caramely, nutty, bready, and lightly earthy malts add a little support for the coffee. Mouth feel is rather still, with a fine, razor-sharp crispness that fades away quickly back to the still, lightly-grainy texture. It has a medium thickness. Nitro smooths out the texture, making the grain and crispness apparent until it sharply falls off. Overall, coffee is well-done here and pairs up well with the imperial cream ale. It's a heavy beer as determined by ABV (12%), but drinks more like a 6% beer.

Served in a 15.5oz Spiegalau tulip from a 12oz can.

 

 

 

 

Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a whiskey tumbler glass, this beer pours out golden in color; almost resembling apple juice. It has very small, fine sediment floating throughout, but I can see my fingers on the other side. It forms a pinky width of white bubbles with good retention. 4

The nose carries notes of creamy coffee, milky sweetness, and a little bit of a sweet corn like sweetness I seem to pick up in a lot of cream ales. 4.25

Taking the first drink makes me notice the smooth, exceptionally creamy/velvety mouthfeel before any of the flavor even hits me. I mean this thing is wild. Who ever would of thought that nitro works best on Cream ales? I usually feel that it takes away from the body, but not here. And a dangerously undetected 12% ABV. Vanilla marshmallow like coating thickness. Wow.

The taste brings layers of creamy coffee, but still keeps true to the cream ale style with the background. A lot of creamer presence along with sugar and even vanilla like hints.

Overall, this is an absolutely exceptional beer for the style, in all aspects.

 

12 oz. can purchased in early January 2019 at the brewery. Poured into Lawson's tulip glass and allowed to warm.

L: Small white head with good retention, lots of lacing and a persistent cap and ring. Definite difference from the original version. Beer is a slightly hazy amber.

S: Coffee and cream, malt, and definitely an absence of the alcohol notes you get in the original.

T: Smooooove. Best way I can put it. It's the same taste as original Regular Coffee, but all the bumps are taken out. Just nice coffee and cream and a neutral finish with barely, and I mean barely a sense of alcohol warmth. You have to really try to feel it to feel it.

F: Full-bodied, not much in the way of carbonation. Construction and balance are so, so improved over the original and so, so good as a result.

O: This is the best cream ale ever. It's simply what Regular Coffee was meant to be. Great move on the Nitro.

Pours honey golden color with minimal head. Smells like burnt sugar,coffee,some muted hops. If you have ever been to a Mom and Pop convenience store in NJ you would recognize this as a "Regular Coffee" It tastes more like a regular coffee than a beer. Feels creamy and smooth with tad bit of under carbonation (I am sure that was intended) I can't believe this beer is 12%. I would have a hard time believing 6%. Booze well hidden.

So pleased to add the 1st review of Nitro Regular Coffee to this community.
If regular coffee would be made into a liqueur, or a liqueur candy bon-bon, like a Sugar Fina, this would be it.
a) Paints the glass with walls of lace over a "clear as a shot" body the color of shellac.
s) Regular coffee essentialized (not a word), ok, quintessence.
t) resonating, reverb - can be the final after-dinner drink after cheese and dessert. Espresso would be a good back /side/ pairing.
f) again candy on the tongue.
o) Can you buy this? Should be sold in 8 oz shot cans like RedBull.

Canned on 12/27/2018 so a little over a week old when reviewed. Poured from can into a Carton dimpled mug. It pours a pretty honey-amber color with a super creamy, bright white cap. Like the non-nitro version it has a nice aroma of freshly-brewed coffee and cream. I think it may smell even better than the original. The taste is very similar: it tastes like freshly-brewed coffee and half and half. Fresh as it is, there is absolutely no bitterness. I've noticed that it takes about 9 months for Regular Coffee to begin to have a bitter taste. As expected, the nitro version is velvety smooth with moderate carbonation, and it packs a wallop at 12% Overall, I think I like this version better, which is borne out in my rating. Nitro is appropriate for a beer that simulates coffee - the creaminess is accentuated. It will be interesting to see how Carton brews this popular ale next year.
