Quite a spice profile: cumin, coriander, Sichuan peppercorn, lavender flowers, sweetened with honey and Belgian candi sugar. The pour is dark brown with a bubbly tan head. Dark fruit flavor--primarily figs--and a beautiful evolution of flavor that takes you from spice to sugar. But the beauty of it all is the beer's subtlety. Flavors evolve but never overwhelm. A really tasty cold night sipper.

a: murky dark brown, almost black color with a touch of dark purple. pours a 1 finger frothy dark tan head, which I'm surprised is so large given the abv
s: sweet malts, dark cherries, fig and some roasted malt. sweet strawberry fruit snacks, and a noticeable alcohol note. plums, raisins, and nice caramelized apple. some brown sugar and toasted malt at the end. very pleasant aroma
t: follows the nose. dark, sweet cherries and sweet caramel upfront. figs, prunes, plums, and raisins behind that. a slightly toasted malt note followed by a flat alcohol flavor which actually mellows it out instead of heating it up. huge fruitbready backbone to this one, and just the faintest kiss of earthy hops. the alcohol is very well masked in this one, so this can be dangerous
m: full mouthfeel with low-moderate carbonation
o: warming for sure. it's a bit high on the abv side, IMO. i think the alcohol in the flavor, whilst well-masked, does prevent some of the robust malt characters from coming through

1st review. This is revised Decoy where the backstory, narrated by a fat, 40-something Augie Carton is lovingly told below in 2013. 8 years later what have we learned?
a) splash of peppery lace around the snifter over a solid walnut brown body. (brown sauce)
s) faintly of peppercorn and spice, tea and spice cabinet of black teas and old spice, wood, smoke.
t) Follows the aromas with a nice back-drop of peppery burn.
f) Silky, sweet/pepper, last beer of evening (at least before you hop on the winter stationary bike and do a Time Trial)
o) It's a replay of Decoy, with slightly more pepper? Save for special occasions.

As always, we believe our own (Carton in my home town), our water, our terroire is best. You gotta love where you live. And I do love Carton beer.
