2022 vintage
Time to break into some of the bottles I took home from Carton last month. I’ve never had anything wild from them, so I’m excited to see how they handle the style. I’m especially a sucker for wine grapes in Wild Ales, so I’m sure this will be very good. Let’s get into it
Pours a cloudy deep gold with a finger of white head that fades to a ring and leaves no lacing
The nose is definitively acidic, but still nicely balanced. I’m picking up aromas of white wine vinegar, wet hay, crabapple, lemon zest, wheat bread, and light leather
Oh man, this is really good up front, but it gets absolutely killed in the finish with high levels of diacetyl. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting lemon juice, tart white grape, green apple, sharp oak, straw, light vinegar, and strawberry. The swallow brings notes of crabapple, buttery oak, tannic white wine, and light peppercorn
A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a sharp and tart beer. Finishes neutral but buttery
I don’t hate this, but it’s not great. I know Carton can do better though so I won’t hold this one against them
