This was my first schwarzbier/black lager. It was mostly black in color with brown around the edges where the light could peek through. The initial smell was malt vinegar, so much so that I thought they might have accidentally gotten some in my glass. It was a good smell though and I pushed onward to the tasting. The taste was a clean, lager taste with a smooth mouth-feel. I enjoyed this beer and one day I think I will be able to truly appreciate well made lagers.

This is the Bull and Bush's summer release.
Arrives in a pint glass with a little bit of foam on the top of it. It's somewhere between jet black and dark brown depending on the light. I brought home a growler (so I can see it in better light) and it's not quite as dark as it appears in the dimly lit B&B.
Smell is roasted malt up front, but noble hops on the back end. Seems pretty authentic to me.
Taste is slightly drier than I would've liked. It's got a bitter chocolate bite and a little bit of hops twang in the finish. I would've liked a tiny bit of sweetness, especially knowing B&B's trademark sweet malts.
It's the right texture for summer drinking although I think the bitterness might limit this as a quencher or hot day beverage.
I'd actually say this would make a nice accompaniment to a burger or shepherd's pie, though. It's hearty, but goes down easy.
Not a bad Schwarz at all. Reminds me a little of Kostrizer, although a little heavier on the roasted flavor.
