(NOTE: I have this listed as a Bock, but it's essentially a spiced winter lager that is of "bock strength")
Arrives a deep reddish brown (cherry-wood) with a 1/4" cap of foam. Looks inviting...plus it's served in a full pint glass, also appreciated.
The nose reveals dark bready malts and hints of cinnamon. As it warms the alcohol reveals itself a bit more, but it's not too boozy.
The flavor profile reminds me a bit of the Winter Lager from Boston Beer, which was a likely inspiration. Dark caramelized malts up front and mild spices (cinnamon/nutmeg) in the finish. Hops are of the earthy variety and contribute mild bitterness more than flavor. While the spices are there, they aren't as strong as I feared. Diacetyl creeps in with some sips, but doesn't detract much.
Easier to drink than it's more potent spicy cousin (Yule Fuel), I found this to be a welcome addition and nice pairing with a burger or meaty dish.
Not bad. It has a few rough edges, but I find this to be up my alley.
