1 litre growler purchased at the brewery
Pours pilsen/gold light with a big, quickly fading, airy head. Not an overly impressive looking beer.
The nose is mild, but a little fruity (berries), hints of spice, and faint aromas of pumpkin or squash.
A surprisingly bitter and hoppy taste - remarkably American tasting, actually. Much more character than the traditional German pils, it is very dry with an almost grassy/earthy flavor.
A champagne mouthfeel that starts out lovely, but as it sits in the glass, it becomes oddly syrupy and much less appealing. Could this be the result of the growler? Or just the way the beer is?
Overall, really not a bad pils. Crisp and refreshing (at least early in the pour), a fair amount of body, and a true character, this pils is certainly worth trying if you find yourself in Michelstadt.
As an aside: while at the brewery, I ordered a Märzen to take home. The woman behind the bar sold me an unmarked bottle that she took from a fridge. Imagine my surprise when I poured myself a Pilsener the next day! Very disappointed...
