Brea, CA
Dark brown with a thin tan head. Not much lacing down the glass. Doesn't look at all overly thick in the glass--perhaps even a touch thin.
A lot of roasted malt in the aroma and a touch of sweetness and coffee, but dominated by the roasted malts.
Relatively well balanced flavor but not a lot going on. The beer is dominated by roasted malts, a little bit of coffee and chocolate sweetness. Drinkable.
Thin to medium mouthfeel. Ample carbonation. Appropriate for the style and ABV.
A relatively unimpressive, even boring, oatmeal stout. There's simply not a lot of aromatics or flavor going on. My 89-year-old grandma liked it (take from that what you will).

A: The pour is a dark brown color with ruby red highlights when held up to the light. A finger's worth of off-white head.
S: The nose is on the sweet side with chocolate, oatmeal, and caramel malts. A bit of roast and coffee to go along with it.
T: A pretty decent flavor, but not overly impressive. Chocolate, mild coffee, mild roast, and a hint of bitterness. Like most of the other beers Taps has, very sweet.
M: The body is medium with a smooth carbonation. Not quite as silky as oatmeal beers tend to be.
D: This is a good beer, but it's not mind blowing. I wish it was a little more interesting and had more intense flavors.

I can't resist the temptation of cask ale in my area, so I've come back to trying the oatmeal stout, even though the tap version was merely solid. The cask version leaves solid lacing on the glass with an oddish cheesy aroma mixed with the sweet house yeast. Very soft in the mouth....seems more sugary tasting and sweet, roasted stout flavors are subtle. My tap notes tell me I found some chocolate notes, but I'm not finding them in this cask version. Not a bad drinker, but not as interesting as a number of other oatmeal stouts.

The color was what you would expect for an oatmeal stout, very deep brown, almost black, with a nice creamy light tan head. Smelled nice and roasty, but the taste wasn't as rich as I was hoping. Nice roasted malts and mellow sweetness. It had a slick and full mouthfeel although maybe slightly on the thin side. Overall a a pleasant beer.

The last beer served at the Taps Taste of the Harvest beer dinner on 10/21/03, this offering was a dark chocolate brown with ruby edges and a medium-sized creamy mocha colored head. The smell was of espresso coffee and baker's chocolate over roasted dark malt. The taste was somewhat bittersweet with a strong coffee note and of semisweet chocolate. Hints of dark fruit lurked about and the finish was moderately bitter. The feel was medium-bodied, smooth and creamy.
This beer was a bit of a let-down. I thought the oatmeal added would have smoothed out the flavors some but this one kind of missed the mark, IMO. I'd stay with Sam Smith's or Young's offerings in the future.
