A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2014, so it's well out of date. Being a Belgian style, I'm hoping it has improved rather than deteriorated. Purchased a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described on the label as a session-strength saison fermented with a blend of house/saison yeast and hopped with NZ varieties.
A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy orange-amber hue with plentiful fine sediment and intense carbonation. Produces an enormous head of creamy white foam with excellent retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Good lacing.
S: Aroma of fruity saison yeast with hints of coriander, dry spice, subtle grass/hay, earthiness, mild grainy malt and faint stewed leaves. Delicate and decidedly yeasty, but superbly rounded.
T: Tastes of fruity yeast esters with a lingering dry finish. Notes of coriander, dry spice, subtle fruitiness, grass/hay, earthiness, mild grainy malt, faint stewed leaves and a twinge of aromatic hops. Highly attenuated, followed by restrained, leafy bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and good body. Dries the palate. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of earthy yeast, fruity esters and stewed leaves/cardboard.
O: Pretty good - probably too old to be quite as the brewer intended but a decent tipple nonetheless. Looks fantastic, while the aroma and flavour are dry and yeasty with hints of spice, fruitiness and grain. Good body. Little in the way of hop aroma; this has fallen by the wayside. However, an interesting effort that goes down a treat.
