The Bronx Brewery "B-Note"
one pint can without production codes or freshness dating
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a lager brewed with blackberries. It's also a collaboration beer and $3 from every case goes to support a group that teaches culinary skills so that people in their community can find jobs. Nice, but how is the beer? It's poured cloudy golden-orange-amber colored body beneath a short head of creamy off-white foam. There's a little bit of fruit in the aroma but mainly it's biscuity malt. I also cannot tell what the fruit is, and to be honest I don't know where it's coming from - it could just be from yeast. On to the taste... well, as usual the aroma basically tells you what it will taste like. There is an edge of fruitiness to it that is berry-like, but I doubt I'd pick out blackberry. In fact, I didn't, so there we go. Mostly I get biscuity malt, which is odd because this is a lager and you usually get biscuity notes from pale ale malt. Not that you can't mix things up, certainly you can and I encourage experimentation, but I'd have thought they'd go with something like Pilsner malt or something with even less character (Best Malz Heidelberg malt, Briess 2-Row Brewers malt, etc.). Now I don't mind a beer that has just a light fruit note, and it certainly doesn't have to be super bright, but if your going to advertise it as being a "lager brewed with blackberries" you should at least be able to ascertain what exactly is in there. I'm not really finding a lot of hops although there are some there. I'd say they're mildly herbal and spicy. It's nicely balanced, I'll give it that, and to be honest it's a perfectly pleasant beer all around, it just doesn't live up to its branding. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. The head held up OK, not great by any means, but it did leaves swaths of tiny-spotted sheets of lace. Unfortunately for the people who'll benefit from the donation of the $3 per case I don't think there will be a lot of repeat purchases.
