A somewhat early craft brewer (founded in 1991) in this most British of cities, I bought this Belgian knowing that the odds probably were stacked against Harrington's. (After an entire week being in NZ, I am tiring of drinking British beers and needed some variety.)
Belgian Tempest is a good experiment in the sense that it is good to experiment. But, Belgian Tempest does not succeed.
I feel as though it leaves me between two worlds that, culturally, are very, very, very difficult to reconcile.
A brewer in the British tradition uses yeast to balance malts and hops.
A brewer in the Belgian tradition furthermore uses yeast to accentuate the additives of sugar and spices.
So far, never the twain has met.
In fact, I am reminded at times by Belgian Tempest that tastes are a matter of temperament.
At times, Belgian Tempest reminds me of the average of British ales. Balanced, somewhat tasty; but not interesting.
Have Belgian Tempest again ? The real deal is better for me.
