On-tap at Sour Fest

A: The pour is dark amber in color, almost mahogany with a medium sized khaki head.

S: Not the best nose. There are some nice fruit characteristics such as cherry and blackberry, as well as some moderate vinegar sourness. A nice bit if sweetness, too, but there is a distinct acetone note to it, too.

T: Luckily, the acetone isn't present on the flavor. Big time berry flavors of blackberry and boysenberry. Some cherry and a moderate vinegar note. Fairly sweet with some toffee and chocolate (oxidation?).

M: Medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. The nose had some problems, but overall, pretty solid.

5oz sample at BJ's (Brea) 5/17/2010. All variations spent about the same amount of time in the barrels (since September or October 2009) and looked about the same.

Pours deep red and mildly hazy. Nice white head with not much in the way of lacing or retention.

Aroma is of a small amount of vinegar, some oak, and some funk.

Flavor is oaky, slightly vinegary, mellow, slightly sour, funky, and over all very well balanced.

Light/medium bodied and very drinkable.

This is the second best of the bunch behind the L6/L7 blend which is the same as the "Flemish Red" entered already which is also the same as the BJ's Flemish Red that was at Stone's inaugural Oakquinox a month ago. The only way to make this better was to blend a splash of Tatonka and a healthy dose of fresh Piranha.
