A: A very dark brown beer with a deep garnet hue and some haziness. The head is thin but long lasting, comprised of creamy off-white bubbles that leaves light lacing on the glass.
S: Strong fruity esters and spice aromas with plums, dark cherries having moderately-strong pepper and some clove aromas. A moderate malt sweetness with a little bit of chocolate with a faint touch of roasted malt and a very light smokiness in the background. No hops. A moderate flowery alcohol aroma.
T: More dark fruit and spice blended with some alcohol warmth. The fruit is more plum and some dark cherries with spice flavors of pepper, nutmeg and clove. There isn't much in the way of malt sweetness and the hops bitterness is moderate to moderately-low; the balance is somewhat bitter overall. The finish is off-dry and the aftertaste is of spices and a little bit of dried fruit.
M: This is a medium-full bodied beer with a moderate level of carbonation. There is a light creaminess and a slight bit of prickle that is does not detract and is almost unavoidable when brewing with spices.
O: A balanced winter beer with spices that complement the fruit and spice of the Belgian yeast. I really like that the spice is present but the beer still comes through and I greatly appreciate that this is almost a dry beer with little sweetness. Most Belgian Dark Strongs have a nearly cloying amount of malt sweetness, which is not the case here and lets me enjoy a couple glasses. The brewer stated that this beer is a blend of Barleywine, Belgian Strong and Winter Warmer, but I'd be apt to simply call it a Belgian Dark Strong Ale with a bit more spice and less sweetness than per style. Cheers to Good Nature Brewing for a very tasty brew!
