Good head production for the style, and decent retention as well. Body is unsurprisingly brown with purplish highlights, showing signs of a ton of activity.
Nose primarily focuses on tannins and sour notes. The bourbon perhaps manages to sneak in there, along with plenty of wood and a touch of brown sugar from the malt base. The cherries are quite faint, perhaps overwhelmed by the wine barrels and the large amount of souring agents. Despite the smorgasbord of sour and funky bacteria and yeast, the nose is somewhat vinegar-like without being overwhelming. Quite reminiscent of a Rodenbach, actually.
Flavor follows. The Oud Bruin base is readily apparent, albeit with an overtly sour aspect closer to apple cider and red wine vinegar. Loads of tannins, red grapes, cherries, oak, vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, raisins, dates, plums, and red wine - the latter, in particular, on the back end. The bourbon is barely noticeable, adding a dull woody aspect from the mash.
Moderate-to-strong puckering. Sticky mouthfeel.

Pours a murky dark brown with minimal head and a bit of sedimentation at the bottom of the 375 mL bottle. Pleasantly acetic on the nose and front palate, with cider vinegar, tart cherry, and vinous notes. Some vanilla and oak on the mid-palate. Very nicely balanced and complex.

Corked and caged 375mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 9.99. Bottled 8/1/18. Served in a Sweetwater snifter. Enjoyed 10/21/18.
Pours a deep, murky chestnut with a short cap of ecrue fizz that is gone quickly. A few sparce islands remain, as well as some traces of collar but there is no lacing.
Smells of sour cherries, earth, funky grains, wet wood, wine and some pie. Really nice and it grows on me.
The flavor is certainly sour to match the nose. Acidic stone fruit skins, mild bourbon, old bread, cherry limeade, earth and a slightly leathery character.
Medium full feel with mild carbonation. Notes of earthy, sour cherry pie in the finish.
Sweetwater has a pretty solid oud bruin here. The cherries are present and for the most part the cocktail of yeasts and bugs create a nice, funky complexity.

Poured into a tulip glass. A nearly opaque brown color with a modest tan head. Minimal lacing in the glass. A complex aroma with oak, tart cherries, red wine, and barnyard funk. Moderately tart on the palate. I inhaled bourbon on the first sip and noticed a nice mix of cherries, wine, whiskey, and plums. This was all enveloped in a funky blanket. A clean and dry finish. Overall a fun and lively beer that is a fitting tribute to their friend.
