Notes / Commercial Description:
After 4 months of tilling and hoeing, Farmer MacDanknugs was cockeyed with anticipation, ready to reap his reward of fresh sticky nugs. Firing up his supercharged John Beere, ol’ MacDank blazed straight down to plow some primo Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe, harvesting the funkiest hop buds to cap off this succulent unfiltered 8% Double IPA. Our farmer drifted into a happy haze from the aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit, and orange, daydreaming of the juicy brew to come.

Had on tap. The body defined this beer for me. Sticky and hoppy with a touch of sugary texture, almost oily in the finish. The smell was dank and piney hops with caramel and toffee malts, grapefruit, orange and a sweet vanilla aroma that combines with everything else. Sludgy burnt orange pour with some white bubbles. I was worried taste was going to be too sweet, but ended up, unlike the smell, the hop and fruit mixture was stronger than the sweet malts. Add in some light passion fruit and guava as well.

Hazy orange color with incredible amounts of fizzy, foamy head and tremendous sticky lacing. Aroma is a little weed forward, lol. with some orange and pineapple, both very ripe. Taste is citrusy and very sweet with an ok balance with the hops. Finish is clean with a sugary feel that lingers

Dark copper colored and lightly hazy. There’s a three quarter inch head of off white on top. The aroma is difficult to seek out, but there is some pine. I’m tasting pine and some grassy hops. The mouth is moderately carbonated and crisp.

really excited to find one of these at the local store. pint can into a pint glass, this thing is a murky orange with a huge pile of off white reddi whip that creeps its way down and makes a mess. nose is quite subdued, lots of berry and citrus but quite mellow on the skunk factor. drinking this changes all of that. starts off a bomb of citrus and berries with a sweet malt background and just transforms into a resin-y sticky beer, both after each sip and as it warms. at first i was missing the 'dank' notes but in the end it held true. drinks smooth and almost creamy, leaves a prominent bitterness in the throat and the booze shows itself from time to time. i'll be back for more

SweetWater Brewing Co. "Dank Tank Fresh Sticky Nugs"
16 fl. oz. can, "BIEB date: 01/13/19 B1340"
$3.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I don't normally break apart 4 or 6 packs at Total Wine but I made an exception for this one. Let's see... it says it's brewed from Strata, Denali and Mosaic hops. Mosaic are my current favorite, and I'm semi-familiar with Denali, but I don't think I've ever had a beer brewed with Strata. It's supposedly citrusy and berry-like, similar to Mosaic, but also "dank". We'll see. It's poured a cloudy orange colored body beneath a finger-thick head of creamy off-white foam. The aroma is not as bold as I thought it would be, but this is a double IPA and they tend to have less aroma than standard IPAs. I was expecting more though, it is dry-hopped. It's citrusy and berry-like, but not at all dank. Maybe once it warms a bit. On to the flavor... well that's nice. It's berry-like and gently citrusy, and somewhat "dank", not too much. Again, it's not a real bold hop flavor though. I kind of get some grapefruit out of it, but nothing else very specific. I think I might be getting some apricot, and it finishes with almost a dried, candied pineapple note. Ahh, and that's where you get most of the "dank", in the finish. It'not sweet but it's sweetish. As usual the malt is very basic and straightforward, you don't want to complicate it or it will interfere with the hops. It's balanced nicely, backed by a firm bitterness, and the alcohol helps it to dry in the finish as well. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. It's an enjoyable beer, and it's hoppy but it's not mind-blowingly hoppy. I do like the hop combination though.

Poured into a frosted 16oz mug. Hazy look with a small head that disappeared. Nose is fruity with abundant citrus. Mouth feel is full malty and very satisfying! Taste, Oh My! I'll be having this Hazy Imperial India Pale Ale again....soon! Thank you Sweet Water! Keep it coming!

"Looking to drain the main vein on a 420 mild road trip, el Danko casually slipped into the dankest Nugget hp field known to man. Stupefied by the pungent aromas, his eyes rolled back as he fell into a sea of sticky buds. After 4 days of being pinned to the vines, he thought he was a goner. Believing he was hallucinating as every woodland creature, horny toad, and Sasquatch rushed past his stuck self, he suddenly became petrified as he witnessed a million army ants marching his way devouring everything in their path. He said one last Hail Mary as the ants began to chew on him and the vines. With one final gasp, he jerked free and hauled balls out of the field with biting ants and sticky hops covering his pruned body. Desperately in search of any bite relief he belly flopped in the 1st oasis he saw, which was a fermenter at SweetWater. Fuddled up, el Danko's teabag plunge turned this brew into a double red from the bleeding ant bites, and dry hopped this bad boy from the fresh Nugget hops that were stuck to his pitiful self." Brewed in the style of an Imperial Red Ale, dry hopped with Nugget hops. This is SweetWater's November 2011 entry to the Dank Tank series, as a one-time, very limited bottle release. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a SweetWater snifter. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a taupe-white head of a creamy foam consistency over a deep caramel brown body. Clarity is good with some visible varying sediment at the highlights. Retention is excellent, and lacing is thin and stringy. 4.5

(Smell) Strong peppery, herbaceous and lemony hop notes with a potent bitterness over a smooth, clean caramel malt body with some biscuity malt thrown in for enhanced body. Potency is medium. 4

(Taste) Big wet hop flavor with herbal and peppery hop flavor, very smooth, clean with a moderate bitterness, likely toned down by age, although it's still fairly assertive. The malt body is a simple grain caramel, mildly toasted with some additional graininess for a slightly edgier body. Combined with the strong hop notes, this is a heavy, filling beer but an enjoyable one at that. 4

(Mouthfeel) Texture is mildly sticky, smooth, slightly dry. Carbonation adds a mild crispness and creaminess to the mouthfeel maintaining a lighthearted texture. The body is medium/heavy for a Red Ale, medium+ overall. Alcohol presence is mild-medium, emerging a bit against the smooth hop and malt profiles. 4

(Overall) An excellent wet-hopped red ale that was a tough entry in the Dank Tank series to nab (I only got one), and not one that generates the least bit of regret, even at it's overripe age, the hop flavors hold up incredibly well. If you somehow come across this, it may be worth your trouble. 4
