Reviewed from notes taken at High Hops in Winter 2014.
8.60% ABV. Served on-draught.
HEAD: Pours a quarter finger's worth of white-khaki colour head. Recedes fully within 40 seconds, leaving no lacing.
BODY: Vibrant orange-copper colour. Clean, clear, and translucent. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Appears adequately carbonated. It's a good looking double IPA.
AROMA: Centennial is showcased nice;ly here. Hints of sap and pine complement tame floral and lightly herbal aromatics. Pale malts and some sweeter caramalt help balance out the bitterness.
Lacks any overt yeasty (aside from generic ale yeast esters) aromatics, overt booze, and/or off-notes.
A pleasant and inviting aroma of average strength.
TASTE: Pale malts and caramalts comprise the malty backbone. Boasts floral hop flavour alongside sap, pine, and resins.
Not real citrusy per se, but there are rumblings thereof.
No overt yeast flavours, alcohol, or off-flavours.
It's hop-forward without being biting or overly bitter. Complex enough for an Imperial IPA, but it could use more intricacy and subtlety (but then, so could most beers). Balanced and enjoyable, but nothing really stands out here.
Average flavour duration, depth, and intensity.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, full-bodied. A bit too thick. Slightly overcarbonated. Lightly oily. Refreshing. This texture suits the taste nicely, but doesn't elevate the beer as a whole by accentuating specific flavours.
OVERALL: An above average yet ultimately somewhat plain imperial IPA. Drinkable enough, but fairly forgettable within this oversaturated style. I wouldn't buy it again, but it will satisfy fans of the style. Enjoyable if unimpressive, Dr. Pat's is a wortwhile IIPA that I expected to be better given High Hops is a hop farm.

Nicely sculpted from the choicest American hops, the brewers of High Hops have high hopes from an essential IPA flavor of citrus up front and bitterness to finish, all the while wrapped in a malty sweet cocoon.
Dr. Pat's Double IPA expands upon its standard strength namesake with a bright amber, copper and yes- orange tinted body. As a creamy eggshell froth builds, the nose fills with the classic orange peel and complementary citrus nuances along with a candied taste of caramel, honey and simple syrups as the malts begin to rest against the tongue.
Its floral upstart is short lived as the middle palate invites a bright and bitter taste of orange, grapefruit and light lemon. Impressions of mango come as the sweetness drifts and the bitterness of fresh grassiness, mulled spruce tips and a spicy ginger-like spice persists.
Medium bodied and flirting with the fullish side of mouthfeel, the beer's lingering sweetness casts a granola-like impression on the finish. Bright and bitter, the finish is drying and spicy with alcohol and the peppery nature of hops along with a long and moderately resinous aftertaste and a pleasantly sappy texture.
