DATE: April 29, 2017... OCCASION: another tough loss for the baseball squad, on an otherwise beautiful Saturday--calls for a mid-afternoon light beer... GLASSWARE: Ommegang pokal... pours a swirling, clear, light golden body with a surprising array of bubbling trains... head stays at a half-finger for a time before retreating to a halo and residue... honestly, more of a show than a light beer might usually offer... bright, lively Hallertau or Spalt earthiness and subtle peppery spiciness... light indeed and not much biscuit or lager malts offered... a refreshing flash that drains as fast as it enters--light-bodied, slightly oily at the finish, and, at 4.2% ABV, indeed a rapid-fire release with some creaminess late... not much in the way of flavor, as expected/feared... rice/corn components are the soup du jour, though the hops make a rally... while unfamiliar with Rhinelander, this cam by way of a blind breakbox mix pack, and so I will withhold judgement on the brewery as a whole... this one is enough of a lager to be appreciated beyond the weak rinser, but as with most light beers, words are better left unsaid...
