December 15th, 2015 - Herbal/spice brews playing with horchata are playing with fire. Too many end up feeling like an oversteeped spice tea or a chai drink gone awry, but this stout actually manages to stick the landing with only just a little wobble. The aroma is pronounced and sweet, with cinnamon and almond milk and the spice assemblage familiar from horchata drinks enjoyed in San Diego's burrito and taco joints. The palate is on the thinner side for a stout, especially one in where the malt bill and dark sugars are so firm: raisin and oatmeal without the thickness. A long spicy aftertaste makes it quite tasty at the end, but in the end I think I prefer the non-horchata stout on tap today.
